Super Mario Bros. Wonder not only pays homage to the classic legacy of 2D Mario platformers but also takes daring risks that set it apart from its predecessors. While breaking away from established formulas that have worked for decades can be a bold move, the New Super Mario Bros. series was showing signs of losing its appeal with minimal evolution in each new installment. By returning to the drawing board, Super Mario Bros. Wonder emerges as a more thrilling game compared to recent 2D entries. Notably, one key element that contributed to this freshness involved abandoning a feature that has always been integral to the series.

Originating in the arcade-driven design philosophy of the 1980s, the original Super Mario Bros. retained certain elements, even though it was designed for home play on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Despite the absence of quarter-munching concerns, given the permanence of the cartridge purchase, limited lives and a lack of save files encouraged players to master what would otherwise be a relatively short game. However, one aspect of the challenge promoted a sense of urgency, as the time limit imposed on each level discouraged lingering and imposed a cost on players who took their time.
